History

The Choir was formed as ‘St Johns W I Choir’ in 1959 and was conducted by May Cowley, who unfortunately had to retire due to ill health. Original St Johns W I Choir

Susie Curphey was then asked to coduct the choir and as time went on it developed into the Glenfaba Ladies Choir. The Choir has had many successes at the Manx Music Festival and the Blackpool Music Festival over the years.

A highlight in the Choir's history was the Millennium concert held in the Cathedral 27 July 1979 when the Glenfaba Ladies were joined by The Country singers, Glenfaba Chorale was born! The Cathedral was full to overflowing to enjoy the joint choirs and their guest artists Margaret Curphey, Philip Summerscales and Stephen Barlow.

Glenfaba Chorale 1979Susie Curphey decided it was time to retire in November 1986 after some twenty years as the Choirs Musical Director. The baton was then taken over by Muriel Corkish (Susie's daughter).

The choir has grown and changed over the years. Since 1979 the gentlemen joined us on a regular basis for the Chorale and in 2006 decided it was time they were an 'item' and the Glenfaba Male Voice choir was formed. The first big challenge, with only 15 voices, was the Guild, but, they rose to the occasion and won.
